Corporate carbon footprinting

Sustainability and sustainable behaviour on the part of companies are becoming increasingly important and urgent. The first step in climate management is to draw up a balance sheet of the greenhouse gas emissions caused by your company.

At LEITWERK Consulting, we see ourselves as our clients' companions on the exciting journey towards climate neutrality.

With passion, comprehensive expertise and a clear vision, we see ourselves as the ideal companions to lead your climate reporting to success.

WHAT WE MEAN BY CLIMATE BALANCING

Corporate carbon accounting is a comprehensive process that aims to quantify all greenhouse gas emissions and absorptions. This process includes data collection, calculation, verification and communication of the results as well as strategic goals and measures. The aim is to understand and minimise environmental impacts and improve adaptability to climate change.

Climate accounting enables companies to identify and assess their environmental impact. In addition to contributing to the fight against climate change, successfully reducing emissions can give you a competitive advantage as more and more customers and investors pay attention to sustainability and environmental awareness.

Project examples

Calculation of an initial corporate carbon footprint

Scope of commission

The client, an international trading company, required expertise and support to calculate an initial CO2e balance including Scope 3 as a basis for setting an emissions reduction target within the framework of Science Based Targets (SBT).

Initial situation

The availability and structure of the data required for the calculation were unclear within the company. The calculation should be based on consumption data. The company's existing knowledge of SBTi-compliant climate accounting was incomplete. In addition, the company needed to be set up efficiently for future assessments.

Solution approach

Guidelines for project managers were created for the retail company as part of the project. There was a specific need for support with regard to data preparation and coordination of the methodological approach and data management. A scheduled jour fixe in the project team enabled a regular exchange on project progress and management.

Results

With the initial CO2e balance calculated in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the retail company has the most important instrument for assessing climate effectiveness and deriving reduction targets. With the help of the project documentation, the results could be recorded transparently and provide a solid basis for subsequent years.

Support for product development through product carbon footprints

Scope of commission

A company in the outdoor industry was faced with the challenge of taking the reduction of emissions into account in product development.

Initial situation

The customer should be able to make a data-based decision when weighing up the alternatives. The calculation should be consumption-based and as accurate as possible for the new material compositions. Support was needed for the methodological approach and the actual calculation.

Solution approach

For the chosen method of two comparative product carbon footprints, the project team was guided through the process by the customer, requested the required data and supported the optimisation of data quality. By researching, allocating and recalculating suitable emission factors (secondary), the material compositions could be mapped.

Results

The reduction potential of individual measures was quantified with the help of comparative product carbon footprints. This enabled the project team to classify the emission reduction potential as a direct prioritised basis for action.
