Personal leadership model

Leadership personality requires confrontation with oneself

The demands placed on you as a manager in an organisation are very varied and sometimes contradictory. These are placed on you directly or indirectly by various departments and employees and you may ask yourself the question:

‘How can I create a framework for myself to deal with my leadership skills and further develop my leadership personality?’

In this blog post, we describe what we mean by a personal leadership model.

We also present a template that we have developed based on our experience as consultants. The template can help you to develop your own leadership model and deal with your understanding of leadership in a structured way.

Challenges for me as a manager

Managers are confronted with different and sometimes contradictory requirements from various sources. Perhaps you recognise yourself in this?

You should be a strong and stable personality, know your own goals and be prepared to pursue them. However, you should not be too dominant in order to ensure sufficient room for individual objectives and the development of your employees. In addition, you should support and drive the company's goals through team successes.

You should deal with mistakes tolerantly and openly so that setbacks can serve as a learning field. Communication with management, employees and customers is also part of your daily routine. To this end, you should always be open and extroverted, but in the right measure for each target group. And last but not least, all your employees want to be treated equally and yet managed individually.

In order to maintain an overview here and to find your own common thread, it can be helpful to look at your personal management mission statement.

Development of the personal leadership model

The elements of the personal leadership model are based on the system of the iceberg model:

Values, are often unconscious, deeply rooted, meaningful and pervasive beliefs. They form the basis of the leadership model.

They also influence the beliefs that have arisen from evaluations of previous experiences and characterise our actions as unconscious rules of life.

The unconscious elements of the leader's personality become visible and tangible in concrete actions, which become apparent in the interaction between the leader and the employees they lead.

Personal leadership model for the structured development of leadership skills

In our day-to-day work as consultants, we are called upon to develop our personal leadership skills both in our clients' teams in the project environment and in our role as a manager in our own organisation.

With the template for developing a personal leadership model, we have created a format that can help you to think in a structured way about how you want to shape your leadership role and develop it as a success-relevant competence.

Consciously take time for a topic that is often neglected in everyday life and is seen more as a matter of course than a competence to be developed.

In order to develop your own leadership model, it may also be a good idea to work in tandem with a colleague - even in a small team, a direct exchange can provide new impetus and motivate you to deal with the topic.
