User feedback in an agile context

User feedback in an agile context

Let´s talk agile! - Meetup No. 5

How can user tests be used to obtain customer-oriented feedback?

At our Meetup at the end of March, we had Markus Kugler as a guest speaker on the topic of ‘User feedback in an agile context’.

We summarise Markus' key messages for you!

User Test als Feedbackmethode

Why are user tests useful?

Prior knowledge influences perception, which is why it can rarely be assumed that you really know your users. User tests give companies the opportunity to check their assumptions regarding the target group. User tests are also useful as soon as there is a high degree of uncertainty about the usefulness of a digital product.

User Test as feedback method

What would you like to know?

User tests are used to capture the views of users. To do this, you should be clear in advance about which perspective you want to capture. Specifically, which goal is being pursued and which method is associated with it. The following question should therefore be clarified in advance: Should the user feedback provide information about the needs of the users, the usefulness of the product or the usability of the product?

What do you need for the realisation?

What do you need for the realisation?

  • Define knowledge objective: Assumptions that are to be tested (in terms of usability and / or usefulness)
  • Create prototypes / test artefacts: Assumption to be tested should be comprehensively tangible for the user
  • Define users: Differentiation according to task, experience, technical expertise, motor and sensory skills (but no differentiation according to demographic characteristics)
  • Recruitment and scheduling: place an advert on social media, possibly including a short questionnaire, contact leads and enable them to book an appointment (ratio of leads to test appointment 1:3)
  • Create a guide: Contents include introduction and introduction, reference to ‘thinking aloud’, general questions to get started, specific tasks to be completed on the prototype, control questions
  • Implementation: The time frame should be limited to 60 minutes and two people from the tester's side should always be present
  • Evaluation: Findings are more important than the form, findings are summarised and interpreted
Markus tips & tricks for practice

Markus' tips & tricks for practice

  • Stay curious and do not interpret
  • Don't take compliments from users too seriously (always ask)
  • Debunk ‘gossip’
  • Guidelines serve as orientation (always allow flexibility during a user test)
  • Organise a tech check appointment with the users in advance
  • Small user groups are sufficient
  • Pay attention to expressions of emotion
Just four users per user group are enough to find the majority of problems and obtain clear indications of usefulness.

About the guest speaker Markus Kugler

Markus Kugler has been in the online business since 1997, initially working for various online agencies as a trainee, screen designer, project manager, head of creation and head of consulting, before becoming self-employed in 2002.

As one of the two founders, managing directors and owners of coeno, Markus still tries to keep one foot in project work. He simply enjoys working with his customers to optimise the user experience of their products and also helping organisations to sharpen their focus on customer and user experience. As a certified usability engineer, Markus has zero tolerance for poor usability and is a great advocate of involving users in the requirements process. (Find out more about Markus here)

More information about the Meetup series

In May 2021, we launched the digital lecture and discussion series ‘Let's talk agile!’ on the Meetup platform.

What motivated us to do this?

The key insight from our work in agile teams and organisations is that the idea of continuous development must also be applied to oneself. Ambiguity requires continuous learning, rethinking and reorganisation and increases the relevance of exchange and networking with others.

We know that successful work in an agile organisational environment requires courageous trial and error and experimentation. Anyone who engages with agile working is aware of the numerous benefits as well as the challenges, which can vary greatly depending on the environment. Working in an agile context is about continuous learning and having the courage to make mistakes and draw new things from them.

The fifth discussion round with Markus Kugler will deal with the topic of ‘User feedback in an agile context’. You can look forward to more exciting guest speakers and topics this year!
