Innovation management

Sustainable innovation management is extremely important for companies, as it contributes significantly to competitiveness and long-term corporate success. In a constantly changing business world, the identification and implementation of innovation projects is crucial in order to meet changing customer needs and differentiate oneself from the competition in the market. Our experts at LEITWERK Consulting work closely with you to analyze which innovation strategy is best suited to your project.

We support you in consolidating the resulting project ideas and prioritizing them according to the overarching strategic goals. In addition, we create a culture of innovation that promotes creativity and appreciation, which is essential for sustainable innovation management. Finally, we take care of the seamless integration of the selected project ideas into your project portfolio and ensure an efficient allocation of resources within the portfolio.

What is Innovation management?

As part of innovation management, various process models are used to generate innovative ideas that are implemented in the form of projects. Among these process models, three particularly value-adding approaches stand out.

The open innovation approach involves the joint generation of ideas and the development of innovations with external stakeholders such as customers, suppliers, universities or the general public. In contrast, the strategic partnership approach strives for long-term cooperation with companies that have complementary skills or resources in order to successfully bring innovations to market through synergies and economies of scale. Idea management is a continuous internal company procedure that systematically promotes the generation of new ideas by employees. There are usually no predefined fields of innovation, specific questions or challenges.

In addition to the three conventional process models, we have identified the need for an accelerated internal innovation process to implement strategic fields of innovation, issues or challenges in our day-to-day project work. We have developed the LEITWERK Innovation Accelerator for this purpose. This ensures the necessary innovation process for generating, consolidating and prioritizing project ideas according to company-relevant perspectives within the shortest possible time. The creation of a creative, appreciative and risk-taking culture of innovation is a key success factor for us.

Project examples

I. Conceptualization and implementation of innovation management to generate data-based after sales offer solutions

Initial situation

Future challenges and changing framework conditions due to economic factors and increased sustainability requirements gave rise to a critical review of the existing strategic direction in aftersales. The result was the specific task of generating innovative project ideas that would contribute to overcoming the aforementioned challenges. The short time horizon of four months for the entire process of idea generation, rough conceptualization, initial economic evaluations and decision-making was a special circumstance.

Solution approach

Using an innovation process developed and implemented by LEITWERK Consulting, project ideas were generated and prioritized in an environment that promotes creativity. The prioritization cockpit made it possible to rank ideas at the idea stage using weighted strategic and economic evaluation criteria. An efficient decision-making process was brought about by the management in a pitch day. The idea providers were able to convince the management jury of their idea in two rounds and secure the project contract.

Results

The innovation process enabled a structured and strategically relevant prioritization of the large number of submitted project ideas. This made them comparable despite their varying degrees of maturity. The Pitch Day format not only created a quick path to decision-making, but also an appreciative framework for employees and increased awareness at management level. At the end of the half-day event, the immediate implementation of five project ideas and an iterative repetition of the format were commissioned.

II. Development of a new business model for future after sales

Initial Situation

A premium car manufacturer was faced with the challenge of developing new approaches to customer loyalty and placing the customer more at the center of the after sales offering. The business model had to be rethought and new, cross-departmental approaches had to be designed that were service- and future-oriented.

Solution approach

During an intensive week ('Speedboat'), an interdisciplinary and international team developed a value proposition via a Business Model Canvas (BMC), which offers an answer to customer needs in different segments.

Results

The result of the speedboat was a future business model that was supported by all departments and markets. In follow-up workshops, the markets defined measures to support the achievement of the newly defined strategy. In addition to sharpening the overall strategy, there were also strong team-building effects and a rethink among all those involved.

III. Design Thinking - Training

Initial situation

The increasing complexity and speed of the job market has created a need to enable teams to work together in a flexible and adaptable manner. Due to international team structures and forms of work, the focus was on raising awareness of different approaches and optimizing interfaces - e.g. between agile and traditional teams. Due to the diversity, a training course was requested that was tailored precisely to the company.

Solution approach

In a two-day training format, participants were given an overview of frameworks such as Scrum, Kanban, Business Model Generation and Design Thinking. Interactive elements were used to make the frameworks tangible and bring them to life. For example, the complete design thinking process was run through with an example including prototype development. The different working contexts of the participants were taken into account through reflection questions and formats such as the knowledge market.

Results

Overall, the participants were given a good overview of agile working methods, the differentiation from classic project planning and the classification and meaningfulness of both approaches. The cross-departmental constellation of participants made it possible to network within the company on topics such as product development, agility and collaboration. By directly experiencing the approaches, the participants' toolbox was filled with various tools and the transfer to everyday working life was facilitated.
