Agile working for optimised team performance

Scrum Framework

The fast pace of today's business world requires a high degree of adaptability in product development. Development teams must be able to react quickly and efficiently to constantly changing requirements. This is the only way they can deliver high-quality products. The Scrum framework provides organisations with the right framework to strengthen effective, transparent and agile collaboration within teams.

Together with you, we analyse where your team already stands. Based on the results, we define the next steps and develop a strategy for the successful implementation and optimisation of the Scrum framework. In doing so, we customise our consulting services: From basic training courses and support during the implementation of Scrum to taking on individual roles, we support you according to your needs.

Scrum briefly explained

Scrum is an agile framework for the collaborative development of complex products. The aim is iterative and incremental product development, focussing on adapting to changing requirements.

Based on short development cycles, the sprints, Scrum promotes flexibility, transparency and teamwork through a clear meeting structure. The tasks for the upcoming cycle are selected in sprint planning. The Daily provides the opportunity for regular synchronisation of the team's work. The Sprint Review and Retro Meetings are used to review the developed product and the collaboration.

In addition, the Scrum framework provides for key roles, including the Scrum Master, who is responsible for the effective implementation of the framework and the productive collaboration of the Scrum team.

The Product Owner, responsible for the requirements and prioritisation of the product backlog, is another central role in the Scrum framework.

The Scrum framework is used in companies of all sizes and industries at team level, from software development to marketing. It promotes flexibility, self-organisation and continuous improvement. In larger contexts, scaled frameworks provide supporting structures to effectively scale Scrum and coordinate collaboration between different teams.

This scaling allows the agile principles of Scrum to be extended to an enterprise level while maintaining a coordinated way of working.

How do Scrum Masters and Product Owners support development teams?

  • Icon Scrum Master

    Scrum Master

A Scrum Master, sometimes also referred to as an Agile Master, has expertise in agile practices and principles and brings these to an agile team. By anchoring the agile mindset, a Scrum Master ensures that the five Scrum values of openness, commitment, courage, focus and respect are practised. A Scrum Master supports and encourages the other Scrum roles to continuously improve the agile processes and to identify and overcome obstacles. The resulting collaboration and self-organisation increases the efficiency and productivity of the agile team.

  • Icon Product Owner

    Product Owner

A product owner is considered a ‘value optimiser’ and therefore plays a key role in organisations and agile teams. In their role as a link between stakeholders, customers and the development team, a product owner is responsible for the product vision and product decisions. To this end, they are always well informed about customer and market requirements. A product owner collects and prioritises the requirements in the product backlog and regularly obtains customer feedback. In this way, a product owner ensures the optimisation of the customer value of delivered products and services.

Project examples

I. Optimising collaboration and increasing efficiency at a customer in the automotive industry | Introduction of the Scrum framework

Scope of commission

The subject of the assignment was the design, implementation and support of an agile management and working method based on Scrum for partner companies in the area of network security for an automotive group. The aim was to strengthen cooperation between the various parties involved and thus ensure transparency and knowledge sharing.

Initial situation

Several partner companies worked in parallel on overarching services. There was hardly any networking and exchange. Shared knowledge was also not utilised. Topics were tracked individually and separately, not recorded centrally and were sometimes lost. Only individual participants had prior agile knowledge.

Solution approach

In the first step, the consultants analysed the existing way of working and exchanged ideas with all those affected. Based on this, they worked with the client to implement an agile working model according to the Scrum framework. JIRA was chosen as the supporting tool. The teams were introduced to the Scrum framework in workshops, questions were clarified and details of roles and events were specified. A goal-orientated introduction to JIRA was also provided.

Results

Through the introduction of the Scrum framework, the participants increasingly saw themselves as a team. There was regular dialogue and the team benefited from the collective knowledge. Internal stakeholders appreciated the transparency of current topics, the structured management and the rapid processing of ad-hoc measures.

II. promotion of user-centred and focused collaboration at a financial services provider | optimisation of an existing Scrum framework

Scope of commission

Our LEITWERK consultants were asked to optimise the already established Scrum framework to support the client in the development of a digital user-centric E2E service.

Initial situation

Our client had the vision of establishing an innovative, digital service on the market that would enable private individuals to handle the process of buying and selling goods from any location simply, securely and completely digitally. The development of the service with the help of the Scrum framework had already started, but some weak points in the implementation became apparent.

Solution approach

As experts for the implementation of the Scrum framework, we analysed the weak points in the previous application of the Scrum framework. We were then able to ensure efficient use of the Scrum framework by sharpening the role profiles, setting up a clear and regular event structure and establishing a standardised process for writing up to the implementation of user stories.

Results

The introduction of standardised processes and sharpening of role profiles resulted in a high level of satisfaction among the project team. The smooth application of the Scrum framework also enabled the project team to work in a more user-centred way and focus on the right things. It was possible to react quickly and flexibly to external requirements and changes to the framework conditions.
